Over the years as a busy working mom I’ve come to depend a lot on fast food to feed my family of 5. The convenience, the multiple locations and the low prices are really hard to beat. But, as a healthcare professional I have to take in account the amount of calories consumed from eating fast foods. Fast foods are packed with tons of calories if you’re not choosing the healthier options.
Many restaurants have gotten on board and offer a pretty good alternative or healthy menu option. Instead, of fries in kids meals you can get fresh fruit or applesauce. Instead of pop loaded with sugar there is a milk option. So, I think it’s safe to say not all fast foods are created equally.
Whenever I go to the drive thru window I take my time and look at all of the options. I just don’t go for the advertised or cheap options, I choose the healthier options with less calories. Sometimes that means no cheese on the burgers or water instead of pop, ( that’s soda for you West coast readers). Sometimes, I order the meat, chicken, burgers or fish from the fast food restaurant and make fresh sides at home.
I get it, I know there are so many hours in a day and buying fast food can be more convenient on all of us. But taking an extra minute or two and paying an extra dollar or two can help your family in the long run.
