It’s Friday August 26, 2016 in Detroit, Mi. The temperature is between a sauna and a mud bath. Me, the hubs and my oldest D are braving the heat, humidity and the hustle and bustle of downtown Detroit lunch hour to visit 777 Woodward Ave. better known as Potbelly Sandwich shop.
As soon as we walked through the doors we were greeted with a “good vibe.” Almost every seat in the place was taken. The line to place orders was long and behind the counter was packed with smiley faced employees working in a rhythm that moved you along much faster than expected. The aroma of fresh pastrami, loaded baked potato soup and home baked cookies overloaded my olfactory receptors in a nostalgic visit to grandmas kinda way.
Most of the customers who were in line were repeat patrons that candidly answered my questions as we listened to music and patiently waited for our orders to be filled. When asked why they chose Potbelly’s when other options were available? I was told over and over again: “Potbelly’s has fast service, usually within 8 minutes or you get a Giant baked daily fresh Cookie for your inconvenience and the food is consistently GOOD, every time.
I think Felicia, who works in the IT department at a local nearby business said it best when she said, ” I come to Potbelly’s because I only get an hour for lunch and I don’t want to spend that time waiting on my food.” Potbelly’s is in walking distance from work; I have more than enough time to walk here, order my food, eat my food and enjoy the entertainment at Campus Martius Park outside and walk back to work with plenty of time.”
We quickly received our order and like Felicia, we decided to eat outside on the patio. Listening to live music and enjoying great food in the heart of downtown Detroit was an experience we won’t soon forget.
