What’s your interior design style? I would have to say my style is more eclectic. As I think about all of the places I’ve lived as an adult, each place was decorated by me, differently. My economics probably had a lot to do with how I eventually designed my home. But, personal style is innate and regardless of your finances, your personal flair should always shine through.
I think the first thing I take into account when designing my personal space is color. What color for the walls, floors and furniture. Purple has always been my favorite color and over the years, I’ve had purple suede dining room chairs, Lavender walls and plum carpet. Choosing your color pallet is the first step in designing your room. Different shades of your designated color throughout a room, ties in your theme.
Various items can be accent pieces. Throw pillows, rugs, even lamps are accent pieces. Strategically placed throughout a room accent pieces can give your room a pop of color. A turquoise lamp or purple rug in a room with neutral tones, shows of your whimsy and are great talking pieces. Remember, you don’t have to stifle your style or give up color.
I love a room with windows. Natural light is the best light especially in the summer months. How you choose to decorate your windows is endless. Curtains, drapes, blinds are just a few of the options available. I often use heavy drapes in the winter, but switch to a more flowy type curtain in the spring and summer months. Changing the window dressing can transform a room dramatically and usually isn’t very expensive.
Choosing furniture for a new living space, make take sometime and depends on the rooms usage. Who will be using the room. How often the room is used and more importantly what percentage of natural sunlight does the room receive. Sunlight can be detrimental to many fabrics. Over the years, fabrics can become bleached by the sun and faded. Take your time and consider all of your options before buying furniture for a new space. Ask yourself some questions, look at a few design books and then decide. Furniture purchases are usually more expensive and therefore you should be sure you’re happy with your purchase.
