Many of you know I am a kitchen gadget guru. Chances are if it’s for the kitchen I probably have two (2) or three (3) of them. I love having all of the extra gadgets to make my life easier. But, cutting boards to me, aren’t an optional kitchen gadget they are a kitchen necessity.
It’s true every kitchen should have at least three (3) cutting boards in varying sizes. One for chopping fruits and vegetables, another for chicken and another for beef. Of course you can have more than three but three is the magic number for cutting boards to decrease food borne illness and cross contamination that may occur when preparing food.
A few weeks ago I received a set of Surpahs 3- Layer Overlapping Bamboo cutting boards, in varying sizes for review. It appears with all of my packing and unpacking I misplaced all of my cutting boards. I had been cutting foods on saran wrap, aluminum foil and various substitutes, all of which are very poor substitutes for cutting boards.
The different sizes are great for small and large kitchen duties. The bamboo construction makes them harder yet lighter than maple. They are also not as porous as other boards I’ve tried in the past, which means less moisture absorbency. The small board is perfect for cutting garlic bread or a small container of fruit. The largest board I use for resting beef or slicing beef. The bamboo surface is knife friendly and saves the integrity of my knives and other cutlery.
The medium board is usually used when I’m making home made dough. It gives me just the right surface for kneading by hand and rolling with my rolling pin. It should be noted the bamboo boards are NOT Dishwasher safe. They should be hand-washed after each use in hot soapy water, rinsed and allowed to air dry. To protect the life of the boards apply mineral or vegetable oil to the surface after each use.
