Growing up their were only two options available for menstruating women, pads or tampons. Over the years more options have become available probably as much out of safety for women as necessity.
When I was about 9 years old I heard about Toxic shock syndrome for the first time. Women all over the world were dying just from wearing tampons, it was a very scary time. My mother, who was an avid tampon user was advised by her physician to discontinue the use of tampons. A few years later, I started my period and she explained to me about pads and tampons. Over the years my preferred option were always pads. Despite my best efforts I could always feel the tampon although the directions and my friends said that you weren’t suppose to. I never felt comfortable using tampons it’s very awkward walking around feeling a foreign object in your vajayjay all day.
Although most advertising is geared towards the same ol’ two options if
you take the time and browse down the Feminine hygiene aisle you will
see menstrual cups. Last month was my first time trying the Sckoon cup instead of pads. I felt so liberated and extremely confidant and comfortable. Finally, I had a product that was toxin free and comfortable. In fact, I didn’t feel the product at all, unlike pads that can become bulky and uncomfortable.
Menstrual cups collect rather than absorb like tampons or pads. Like tampons you insert the Sckoon menstrual cup but unlike tampons they are reusable and not disposable. With the cup you pull it out, empty it, wash it and re-use. Unlike tampons their is no string, instead their is a little ribbed tip or stem attached to the cup that is easy to grab even in slippery situations.
The Sckoon cup is made up of flexible squishy soft medical grade silicon and is approved by the FDA. It has no chemicals or toxins so it is safe to use, environmentally friendly and made in the U.S. I like that it is available in two (2) sizes: Size One for women who have not previously given birth vaginally, (that’s me I had 3 C-sections) and Size Two for women who have previously given birth vaginally. This is a great product for moms of teenagers who are just starting their menses and who are concerned about the chemicals and toxins used in tampons and some disposable pads.
The Sckoon cup is available in several different colors and comes with a small carrying pouch for convenience and privacy. Whether you’re just starting your menstrual journey or toward the end like i am I definitely recommend you at least try the Sckoon menstrual cup. Pads and tampons may seem more convenient but they can be hazardous to your health and the environment. After all think of all of the money you’ll save by using this safe reusable option.
