Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State. We have five lakes that surround our state. In Detroit, we also have the Detroit River and the Rouge River. Because we are encompassed by all of these water sources it greatly affects our climate. The climate in Michigan during the summer months is hot sticky and… HUMID. A breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Our winters in Michigan are usually snow filled and extremely bitter cold. We embrace just the thought of summer. But we also know with summer comes the dreaded mosquito. They bite, they aggravate and they populate our activities of daily living in the summer. Michigan’s climate is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. The humidity and frequent summer rains are the perfect medium for mosquitoes.
Mosquito bites aren’t just scratchy and annoying they can be deadly. Mosquitoes in Africa carry and transmit malaria. It is responsible for millions of deaths. In America the West Nile Virus is carried and transmitted by the mosquito and has been responsible for several deaths. Yes, my friends, the mosquito because of the way it transmits blood from one human to another is one of the deadliest insects on the planet.
It is extremely important to keep your family as safe as possible from mosquito infestations and bites. Standing water left in and around your home will attract mosquitoes. If your gutter’s leak or you have un-even pavement where water pools, remove the water immediately after each rain. Citronella is an all natural repellent to mosquitoes. It can be found in candles, sprays and plants.
Their are several commercial sprays available to use for the home and to repel mosquitoes. Bug- lites are very popular with their familiar blue light and zapping sound, letting you know they’ve killed yet another blood sucker. Mosquitoes, were thought to be nocturnal, but I have seen very large mosquitoes at high noon, so don’t be fooled bu that myth. Remember to do everything possible to keep yourself bug and bite free as you enjoy the summer months.
