I have to admit I was shocked when I found out that some countries have mandatory or compulsory voting. Australia is one of the countries that has mandatory voting. If you don’t vote and are found not to have a good excuse you’re fined $20.
What is Compulsory voting? According to wikipedia compulsory voting is a system in which electors are obliged to vote in elections or attend a polling place or voting day. If an eligible voter does not attend a polling place, he or she may be subject to punitive measures such as fines or community service.
I didn’t, but it sure got me thinking about Detroit’s recent turn out in the primary election for Mayor of Detroit. Sure, their were headlines about the count and various other shenanigans, but the overall voter turnout was shameful to say the absolute least. I believe the polls stated less than 20% voter turnout.
“Wow! Really? In the largest municipal location that has filed for BANKRUPTCY protection, less than 20% voter turn out for Mayor?”
As Detroiter’s we need to do Better. Which brings me to the question do you think we should have mandatory voting in America? Do you think political races would turn out differently? Leave me your thoughts in the comments below.
