I think as parents we are all extremely excited when summer vacation rolls
around. No more getting up at the crack of dawn to make lunches, go over
homework assignments and just the daily ongoing hustle and bustle of
getting kids to and from school. I also know I am concerned about how much
education is lost during the summer months. Experts refer to summer vacation
for school aged children as “summer brain drain.” Summer
vacation is fun and everyone needs a break but no parent wants their kids to
lose what they’ve learned or not to continue learning something new every day.
Luckily, the Chicago Museum
of Science and Industry offers a FREE online science program –
Summer Brain Games – to keep kids learning during the summer and prevent “summer
brain drain.” Summer Brain Games keep kids learning, thinking and
problem solving throughout the summer with fun interactive educational
Each week’s online kit features fun science experiments and projects
easily completed with minimal adult supervision. Activities are available in
both English and Spanish. If it were left up to my boys they would play video
games and sports the entire summer never having read or picked up a book.
That’s why they have parents to ensure their learning is 365 days a year. At
first they were not receptive to learning throughout the summer.
After trying the Hydroponic Garden Experiment they were hooked! My middle
son said they learned in science class that you could grow plants and
vegetables without soil but they never actually experimented with it. We simply
downloaded the activity sheet and all decided to plant a different vegetable to
see how our project will turn out.
Although we have yet to see a sprout we are all anxiously awaiting to see.
Me and the boys’ are waiting and watching every day.
I was more than excited to try this project with my kids. I love the way the
project mirrored science education my son learned in school. The project is
more of a continuation of what they were already learning. How cool is that?
