Have you ever been the last in a group of your friends to know some important news or information? Do you remember how it made you feel? Were you angry, sad or just plain mad? Something very similar happen to slaves in Galveston Island Texas on June 19, 1865.
As it turns out slaves in Galveston Island Texas were not made aware of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (Amendment passed outlawing slavery three years earlier September 22, 1862).
The slaves were not informed they were Free until upon arrival of General Gordan Granger on June 19, 1865. The slaves rejoiced in their freedom.
