rely on the healthcare system in one way or the other. My background as a
Geriatric Nurse introduced me to the world of the elderly. Some outlive their
children and have lost the ability to care for them. Many have grown children
with families who are unable or many times unwilling to assist in the care of
the aging parents/ relatives. Geriatric care can be as in depth and laboring as
Pediatric care in many cases. However it is very different caring for the
elderly and caring for babies.
Nursing homes and Assisted Living facilities are one of the leading growing industries in America. The level of care given at each institution is different and should be checked out before admitting a loved one. In Michigan every Nursing Home is listed on a statewide database available online. The database lists how many beds each facility has, how many and what kind of violations they have received as well as the DON (Director of Nursing) and the Administrator by name. The Administrator of a Nursing home has received a Masters Degree in Healthcare and is ultimately responsible for the entire Nursing Home. I often joke with my friends and tell them when you look at the news and see a nursing home being closed or shut down, the administrator is the person you see in handcuffs. Nursing homes receive federal funding and therefore are required to accept residents on all income levels.
