The majority of my family moved out of Michigan many years ago to warmer states. Despite their distance in miles, they always come through during the holidays asking me my request(s) for practical Christmas gifts for me and my family.
shoes. The shoes I select to wear for work must be sturdy and comfortable. When
I work it’s usually 12 or 16 hour shifts, which means a lot of time on my feet.
I suffer from plantar fasciitis which is a very painful foot condition, that targets the heels of my feet. Shoe
orthotics and inserts help tremendously, but the bottom line is, I cannot wear
a cheaply made shoe without suffering intense pain. I recently lost 25 pounds
and this has reduced my reoccurring fasciitis pain, but I don’t want to
exacerbate the problem by wearing a cheap shoe. My shoe of choice is a clog type of shoe. My heel is out and not enclosed and relieves undue pressure on my heels. They are available in various colors and last
a long time.
Tote bags, not purses are another item on my list. I go through tote bags
very quickly. Because I work the night shift on occasion I have a few hours
down time. In an effort to stay awake I started bringing items with me to keep
me awake. Sometimes I crochet or knit. I also use the tote bags to carry my
lunch, an extra uniform, pens, pencils, cross word puzzles and so many other
things I couldn’t begin to name. Oh, and my laptop. I know they have bags
designed just for laptops, but I prefer to carry all my items together in a tote bag. The past few years my aunt
has become quite creative with her embroidery sewing machine. She has sent me a
variety of some very impressive monogrammed personalized totes in different shades of my favorite color, purple.
The last item on this nurse’s wish list is, you guessed it, scrubs/
uniforms. I love my uniforms. I love all of the different colors and styles that are offered now. Years ago when I first became a Nurse, their were few uniform options and they were all white. I was very excited when white uniforms became a thing of the past. Different colors and styles in uniforms allow me the ability to express my own personal style and individuality.
During this time of year I try to wear all of the seasonal uniforms I’ve
received and purchased over the years. My absolute favorite is a uniform top my
grandma sent me two years ago. Rudolph’s nose actually lit up. It only lasted
two years, but I cherish it all the same.
